1Cómo olemosHow we smell
An essential oil is a mixture of hundreds of aromatic molecules that a plant stores in its flowers, leaves, peels, wood or resin. Many of those molecules are volatile: at room temperature they escape from the liquid and travel through the air. When they reach your nose, they land on receptors that send a signal to the brain, and that is smelling.
Moléculas pequeñas y ligeras: salen rápido y llegan primero (muy volátiles).Small, light molecules: they leave fast and arrive first (very volatile).Moléculas medianas: salen a un ritmo intermedio.Medium molecules: they leave at a middling pace.Moléculas grandes y pesadas: salen despacio y se quedan más tiempo (poco volátiles).Large, heavy molecules: they leave slowly and stay longer (not very volatile).
That ease of evaporating is called volatility. That is why lemon smells intense when you open it and is barely noticeable half an hour later, while cedarwood is still there the next day. When you blend oils, you are not just combining smells: you are combining speeds.
Heat speeds up evaporation. That is why a lit candle releases its scent into the room, and why essential oils are added once the mixture has cooled down.
2Las tres notasThe three notes
Perfumers sort scents into three “notes”, according to how fast they evaporate. A complete blend has a little of each, like a song with a melody, a rhythm and a bass line.

It appears as the top fades and is the body of the scent, what people remember. It lasts from minutes to a few hours.Flores, hierbas, especias.Flowers, herbs, spices.
Large, heavy molecules that evaporate slowly: it is what remains hours later, on skin, on clothes or in an unlit candle.Maderas, resinas, vainilla.Woods, resins, vanilla.
Si las pones en círculo, las familias vecinas combinan con facilidad; las que quedan lejos crean contraste, y a veces necesitan un aroma «puente».Besides its note, each oil belongs to a family: a group of scents that resemble each other. If you arrange them in a circle, neighbouring families blend easily; those far apart create contrast and sometimes need a “bridge” scent.

Neighbours that work: lavender with bergamot (floral and citrus), peppermint with lemon (minty and citrus), cedarwood with frankincense (woody and resinous). And a famous contrast: orange with cinnamon. Citrus and spicy are not neighbours, but together they smell of Christmas and everyone recognises them.

As a rough starting point: 30% top notes, 50% heart and 20% base. Then adjust to taste: it is not a law.
With too many oils the scent turns “muddy” and is hard to repeat. Three well-chosen oils shine more than eight.
Before spending oil on a batch, put drops on strips of blotting paper (or coffee filter paper) and smell them together.
Which oils, how many drops, the date and what you thought after 5 minutes, an hour and the next day. Without notes, the perfect blend never happens twice.
⏳Deja reposar 48 horas o másLet it rest 48 hours or moreRecién hecha, una mezcla huele «a partes». Freshly made, a blend smells “in pieces”. In a closed bottle, the scents come together and round out.
Base notes such as cedarwood, patchouli, copaiba or frankincense evaporate slowly and hold back the top notes a little: the scent lasts longer.
If two oils do not get along, look for one that blends with both. Bergamot links lavender with cedarwood; geranium links flowers with citrus.
3 gotas de una nota de salida (30 %).3 drops of a top note (30%).5 gotas de una nota de corazón (50 %).5 drops of a heart note (50%).2 gotas de una nota de fondo (20 %). Anótalo y deja reposar 48 horas.2 drops of a base note (20%). Write it down and let it rest 48 hours.
Prueba una mezcla, paso a pasoTest a blend, step by step
Choose 2 or 3 oils: one top, one heart and one base. Check “Blends with” on each sheet.
Dip a paper strip in each oil (or add 1 drop) and write the name in pencil.
Fan the strips together about 10 cm from your nose. If one oil drowns the others, move its strip away: that is how you test “fewer drops” without wasting oil.
When you like it, mix drops in a small glass bottle, for example 3 + 5 + 2, and write it down.
Close it, label it with the date and let it rest 48 hours or more, away from light.
Ajusta y repite.Smell it again on a fresh strip after 5 minutes, an hour and the next day. Adjust and repeat.
Work out how much blend your product takes with the tool in the next step, and make a small batch first.
«Gotas» y «partes» son lo mismo para la proporción: 6 + 3 + 1 gotas es la misma mezcla que 60 + 30 + 10 g. Para un lote grande, pesa en gramos: es mucho más exacto que contar gotas.“Drops” and “parts” are the same for the ratio: 6 + 3 + 1 drops is the same blend as 60 + 30 + 10 g. For a large batch, weigh in grams: it is far more accurate than counting drops.
5Arma tu mezclaBuild your blend
Each oil’s sheet gives a maximum dose for each type of product. In a blend, the most delicate oil sets the pace: the tool combines all their doses like this:
% máx. de la mezclamax of blend = 1 ÷ Σ (fracciónfraction ÷ % máx. del aceitemax of oil)
Por ejemplo, mitad de un aceite con máximo 1 % y mitad de otro con máximo 3 %: 1 ÷ (0,5 ÷ 1 + 0,5 ÷ 3) = 1,5 %. Así ningún aceite pasa de su límite.For example, half an oil with a 1% maximum and half another with a 3% maximum: 1 ÷ (0.5 ÷ 1 + 0.5 ÷ 3) = 1.5%. That way no oil goes over its limit.
Arma tu mezclaBuild your blend
Choose 2 to 4 oils and how many drops (or parts) of each. The tool checks the note, family and dose on each sheet.

Ancla los cítricos con un fondo (cedro, pachulí, copaiba).Lye is very alkaline and alters some scents: delicate florals lose their finesse. Citrus oils, being very volatile, fade during curing. Anchor citrus with a base (cedarwood, patchouli, copaiba).
Clove and cinnamon accelerate trace (the moment the batter thickens like custard): have your moulds ready and stir by hand at the end. Vanilla darkens soap.
The base is already saponified, so there is no lye to spoil the scent: citrus holds up better than in cold process. Melt without boiling (about 70 °C at most) and add the blend at the end, just before pouring.
Stir gently to avoid bubbles and wrap the bars: glycerine attracts moisture.Calculadora de glicerina →Melt and pour calculator →
🕯️ VelasCandles
Fragrance goes at 3 to 5% of the wax weight. Some oils have a lower cap on their sheet (cinnamon 2%, nutmeg 0.4%), and vanilla is not recommended because it dissolves poorly in wax.
Add it to the melted wax at the temperature your wax calls for (about 80 °C for soy) and stir gently for 2 minutes. Then let the candle cure (7 to 14 days for soy) before lighting it: the scent improves a lot.
They stay on the skin, so doses are much lower than in soap. On the shop’s sheets, 2% at most in a body cream and 1% on the face, and many oils much less. Several are not recommended on the face or lips at all.
In a candle, the fragrance goes into the melted wax at the temperature the wax calls for. Too hot and it evaporates; too cool and it does not mix in well.
8SeguridadSafety
Natural does not mean you can use it without limits. Essential oils are very concentrated: a few drops are worth a whole heap of plant.
💧 Siempre diluidoAlways diluted
Never put a neat essential oil on the skin. It always goes spread through a soap, a cream or a vegetable oil, at the dose on its sheet.
📏 IFRA, en sencilloIFRA, in plain words
Las dosis de nuestras fichas ya los tienen en cuenta.IFRA (the International Fragrance Association) sets how much of certain molecules can be used in each type of product, because some can cause allergies, irritation or sun marks. A rinse-off soap is not the same as a lip balm: that is why each product has its own cap. The doses on our sheets already take them into account.
☀️ Cítricos y solCitrus and sun
Many cold-pressed citrus oils are phototoxic: they contain furocoumarins which, in sunlight, can mark or burn the skin. It matters in leave-on products; in rinse-off soap it does not. In the shop: lime is phototoxic (up to 0.7% in creams) and grapefruit slightly. The lemon is declared furocoumarin-free; without the batch certificate, do not exceed 2% in leave-on products. Apotecario’s bergamot is FCF (bergapten-free), so at its doses it does not mark the skin. Blood orange and mandarin are not considered phototoxic.
Cinnamon, clove bud and oregano (thyme too) can burn the skin and mucous membranes when neat or overdosed. Wear gloves when weighing them, use very low doses and never on the face or lips.
👶 Niños, embarazo y mascotasChildren, pregnancy and pets
With babies, young children and pregnancy, less is more: many oils (mints, eucalyptus, rosemary, camphor, spices) are not recommended; read the “Watch out for” section on each sheet and, if in doubt, leave the product unscented. Cats and other pets are very sensitive to essential oils: do not diffuse near them or use scented products on them without asking your vet.
🫙 Cómo guardarlosHow to store them
In an amber glass bottle, tightly closed, in a cool, dark place, away from children. Air, light and heat oxidise them, and oxidised oils irritate more and cause more allergies. Citrus and pine oils keep the shortest time: buy what you will use in a few months and write the opening date on the bottle.
Put a little of the finished product (not the neat oil) on the inside of your forearm, cover it with a plaster and wait 48 hours. If there is redness, itching or burning, wash it off with soap and water and do not use that formula.
Las calculadoras de Apotecario los agregan solas a la lista INCI.Essential oils contain allergens (linalool, limonene, citral…) which, above a certain amount, must go on the label: 0.01% in rinse-off and 0.001% in leave-on products. Apotecario’s calculators add them to the INCI list for you.
