⚗️¿Natural o sintético?Natural or synthetic?
The science behind what we put on our skin. Whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic does not, on its own, decide if it is safe, if it works or if it is sustainable. Here you learn to look at what does matter: what it is, how much is used, how and in which formula.

1¿Qué es la quimiofobia? What is chemophobia?
At the shop we are often asked: “does this have chemicals in it?”. The honest answer is that everything does. Water is a chemical substance, as are vitamin E, olive oil or the scent of an orange. Everything that exists, natural or manufactured, is made of molecules.
Water (H₂O): the main ingredient in almost every cream.2Glicerina (C₃H₈O₃): atrae agua y suaviza.Glycerin (C₃H₈O₃): draws in water and softens.3Limoneno (C₁₀H₁₆): el aroma de la cáscara de naranja.Limonene (C₁₀H₁₆): the scent of orange peel.4Un ácido graso, como los que forman los aceites vegetales.A fatty acid, like the ones that make up vegetable oils.
Chemophobia is a disproportionate fear of chemical substances, usually because of their name (“it sounds chemical”) or their origin (“it comes from a lab”), without looking at what they do or how much is used.
Son preguntas que se responden con datos.“Is this essential oil dose safe on the face?”, “is my cream properly preserved?”, “does this ingredient have a legal limit?”. These questions are answered with data.
Son atajos que no dicen nada de la sustancia.“I cannot pronounce it, so it is bad”, “if it is natural it cannot hurt”, “chemical-free”. These are shortcuts that say nothing about the substance.
The aim of this lesson is not to convince you that everything is safe, but to give you the right questions: what is it?, how much is there?, how is it used?, in which formula? and who will use it?
2Natural no significa seguroNatural does not mean safe
Plants make molecules to defend themselves against insects, fungi and animals. Many of those defences can also irritate, sensitise or be toxic to us. Coming from a plant does not make something gentle.
It contains bergapten, which with sunlight can stain or burn the skin. That is why the shop uses the FCF version, without that molecule.Ver fichaSee sheet
It is rich in cinnamal, a strong sensitiser: on skin it is used at very low doses.Ver fichaSee sheet
A perfumery classic. Two of its natural molecules, atranol and chloroatranol, have been banned from cosmetics in the EU since 2019 because they caused many allergies.
None of this means natural is bad. It means natural ingredients are also studied, dosed and sometimes restricted, just like synthetic ones. In step 8 you will see the difference between hazard and risk, which is the key.
3Sintético no significa peligrosoSynthetic does not mean dangerous
An ingredient can reach your cream by several routes, and often the same molecule can come out of any of them.
By fermentation: microbes make it, the way yeast makes bread.3Por síntesis: se arma en un reactor a partir de otras moléculas.By synthesis: built in a reactor from other molecules.
And there is a fourth route, the most common: starting from something natural and transforming it with a chemical reaction. Vegetable glycerin and fractionated coconut are examples. Are they natural or synthetic? They are halfway, and that makes them neither better nor worse.
A controlled process (fermentation or synthesis) can give an ingredient that is purer, more consistent from batch to batch and easier to analyse than one that depends on the harvest. It can, not always: it depends on the ingredient and how it is made. Being synthetic does not guarantee quality, just as being natural does not.
Juego: ¿de dónde viene?Game: where does it come from?
Tap how you think each shop ingredient is obtained. Many sit halfway.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:De la plantaFrom the plant. It is steam-distilled from the flowers. Natural… and still it contains linalool, a molecule that can sensitise once oxidised.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:FermentaciónFermentation. Today it is made mainly by bacterial fermentation. It is the same molecule found in your skin.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:FermentaciónFermentation. A bacterium (Xanthomonas campestris) makes it from sugars. It is used in food too.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:De la plantaFrom the plant. It is separated and concentrated from vegetable oils. Synthetic vitamin E exists, but it is not exactly the same: it mixes several forms of the molecule.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:Planta + químicaPlant + chemistry. It comes from vegetable oils, but those oils have to be split by a chemical reaction (as in soapmaking) and then purified.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:Planta + químicaPlant + chemistry. It is usually made from processed coconut or palm oil. The word “alcohol” sounds scary, but it is a soft wax that thickens and softens; it does not dry skin like rubbing alcohol.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:SíntesisSynthesis. It is made by synthesis. It is among the best-tolerated cosmetic ingredients: synthetic does not mean harsh.
¡Bien!Right!Casi:Not quite:SíntesisSynthesis. It is a synthetic polymer that forms clear gels in tiny amounts. That is why an aloe gel can be almost all aloe.
4El caso del ácido hialurónicoThe case of hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a long molecule made of linked sugars that occurs naturally in your skin. It holds a lot of water and forms a soft gel; in a cream it acts as a humectant: it helps skin feel hydrated.
AntesBefore
It was extracted from animal tissue, mainly rooster combs. It was expensive, variable and animal-derived.
HoyToday
It is made mainly by fermentation: bacteria produce it in tanks, the way yeast makes beer. It is then purified and dried to a powder.
Notice the difference between what a substance is and how it is obtained. Fermentation hyaluronic acid is the same molecule as the rooster-comb kind, and the same one in your skin. What changes is the route, and with it purity, cost and impact.
Not all hyaluronic acid is the same either. Its quality depends on its specification: the size of the molecule (molecular weight), its purity and each batch’s controls. That is what to ask about, not whether it is “natural”.Ver la ficha del ácido hialurónico →See the hyaluronic acid sheet →
5Conservantes: natural, sintético y «aceptado»Preservatives: natural, synthetic and “approved”
Lo ves a fondo en laWhere there is water, bacteria, yeasts and moulds can grow. A product without a preservative is not safer: it is a product that can become contaminated without anyone noticing. It is covered in depth inlección de conservantes y pHthe preservatives and pH lesson.
A preservative is chosen for what it does, not its origin: it must cover bacteria and fungi, work at your formula’s pH, be compatible with the other ingredients and the packaging, be used at the permitted concentration and pass an efficacy test.
Cuatro preguntas distintas que solemos mezclarFour different questions we tend to mix up
🌿¿De dónde viene?Where does it come from? Its origin: plant, fermentation, petroleum or a mix.
🧬¿Qué es?What is it?Su naturaleza química: la molécula, sea cual sea su origen. Its chemical nature: the molecule, whatever its origin.
🏭¿Cómo se hace? How is it made?Su proceso: extracción, fermentación o síntesis. Its process: extraction, fermentation or synthesis.
🏷️¿Lo acepta un estándar?Does a standard accept it?Si un estándar privado de cosmética natural lo permite.Whether a private natural-cosmetics standard allows it.
The best-known standard is COSMOS, created by five European natural and organic cosmetics certification organisations (Ecocert among them). It is a private, voluntary standard, not a law: no regulation requires it. It accepts some preservatives that are not of natural origin, such as sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate.
An approved ingredient is not a certified product. COSMOS separates approved or certified raw materials from finished products carrying the COSMOS NATURAL or ORGANIC signature. Using approved ingredients does not let you put the seal on your product: that requires certifying the formula and the manufacturing with an authorised body, such as Ecocert.
6¿Qué pasa con los parabenos? What about parabens?
Parabens are a family of preservatives (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butylparaben…) used for decades because they cover bacteria and fungi well at very low amounts.
¿Por qué la polémica? Why the controversy?
In 2004 a study found parabens in breast tumour tissue samples. The study did not show that parabens caused those tumours, but the story spread. It is also known that, in the lab, some parabens weakly mimic oestrogens, and this has been studied in depth.
Qué dicen las autoridadesWhat the authorities say
En 2023 el comité científico europeo (SCCS) volvió a concluir que el metilparabeno es seguro hasta 0,4 %.Allowed in the EU up to 0.4% each and 0.8% combined. In 2023 the European scientific committee (SCCS) again concluded methylparaben is safe up to 0.4%.
Allowed with a lower limit: 0.14% for the two together, and not in leave-on products for the nappy area of children under 3.
Isopropyl-, isobutyl-, phenyl-, benzyl- and pentylparaben have been banned in the EU since 2014 because not enough data was submitted to assess them, not because they were proven harmful.
The FDA says it has no information showing that parabens, as used in cosmetics, affect health, and that it keeps reviewing the studies.
The takeaway: “parabens” is not one thing. Some are allowed, some restricted and some banned, and each decision has its reason. “Paraben-free” on a label does not say whether a product is safer: it says which preservative it lacks, not which one it has or whether it works.
7Los aceites esenciales también son químicaEssential oils are chemistry too
An essential oil is a mixture of dozens or hundreds of molecules. Its scent, uses and cautions come from those molecules, whose names are as “chemical” as any lab ingredient.
💜LavandaLavenderSobre todo linalol y acetato de linalilo.Mainly linalool and linalyl acetate.
🌸GeranioGeraniumCitronelol y geraniol, entre otros.Citronellol and geraniol, among others.
Linalool, limonene, geraniol and citronellol are on the European list of fragrance allergens. That list grew from 24 to 80 substances in 2023. In the EU they are named on the label above 0.001% in a leave-on product and 0.01% in a rinse-off one, whether they come from an essential oil or a fragrance.
With air and light, linalool and limonene oxidise, and oxidised they sensitise more. That is why oils are kept tightly closed in dark bottles, and their shelf life and sheet dose are respected.Ver la lección de aromas →See the scent lesson →
Watch out for the opposite trap: a molecule having a chemical name and being on an allergen list does not make it toxic. It means some people may be allergic to it, so they have the right to know it is there.
8Peligro, riesgo y dosisHazard, risk and dose
This is the most important idea in the lesson. Hazard is what a substance can do. Risk is the likelihood it will do it in a particular use. A shark is dangerous; the risk of it biting you in your living room is zero.
1Peligro: lo que una sustancia puede llegar a hacer (irritar, sensibilizar, ser tóxica).Hazard: what a substance could do (irritate, sensitise, be toxic).2Exposición: cuánto llega a tu cuerpo, por dónde, cuánto tiempo y cada cuánto.Exposure: how much reaches your body, by which route, for how long and how often.3Riesgo: la probabilidad real de que haga daño en ese uso concreto.Risk: the real likelihood of harm in that particular use.
La exposición depende de la concentración, del tipo de producto (se enjuaga o se queda), del tiempo de contacto, de la zona (no es lo mismo el cuerpo que los labios o una herida), de cada cuánto se usa y de quién lo usa (piel sensible, niños, embarazo).Exposure depends on the concentration, the product type (rinse-off or leave-on), contact time, the area (the body is not the same as the lips or a wound), how often it is used and who uses it (sensitive skin, children, pregnancy).
Picture any ingredient, say an essential oil. Its hazard does not change; watch how exposure changes with the way you use it.
Exposición bajaLow exposure.Poca cantidad, poco contacto. Small amount, little contact. Even so, a high-hazard ingredient (a strong allergen, for example) can still cause trouble for someone already allergic.
Here it matters to respect the dose on the sheet, patch test and think about who will use it.
The same ingredient that is fine in a soap could irritate or sensitise here. Lower the dose, change the ingredient or choose another use.
This is an experiment to grasp the idea, not a safety assessment: that is done by an expert using each ingredient’s data.
How is a cosmetic’s safety assessed?
In the EU, a safety expert calculates how much of each ingredient reaches the body with normal use and compares it with the dose that caused no effects in studies. There must be a wide margin between the two (for many substances, at least 100 times). If there is not, the concentration is lowered or the ingredient is changed.
Nothing is safe at any dose, not even water. And hardly anything is dangerous at any dose. That is why every sheet in the shop gives a use level: it is the practical way to manage risk.
9¿Lo natural es más sostenible? Is natural more sustainable?
It is easy to assume natural means eco-friendly. Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. To know, you have to look at the ingredient’s whole life cycle, not just its origin.
1🌱Cultivo u obtención: tierra, agua, abonos, cosecha silvestre o petróleo.Growing or sourcing: land, water, fertiliser, wild harvest or petroleum.2🏭Fabricación: energía, disolventes, rendimiento y residuos.Manufacturing: energy, solvents, yield and waste.3🚚Transporte: de dónde viene y cómo viaja.Transport: where it comes from and how it travels.4🧴Uso: cuánto se necesita en la fórmula y cuánto dura el producto.Use: how much the formula needs and how long the product lasts.5♻️Envase: material, peso y si se puede reutilizar o reciclar.Packaging: material, weight and whether it can be reused or recycled.6💧Fin de vida: si se biodegrada en el agua y qué deja atrás.End of life: whether it biodegrades in water and what it leaves behind.
A kilo of rose oil takes thousands of kilos of petals. Some wild aromatic plants have been overharvested. And any crop takes up land and water.
Squalane used to come from shark liver; today it comes from olives or sugarcane. Hyaluronic acid stopped depending on animals thanks to fermentation.
Things unrelated to origin count too: whether the ingredient biodegrades, how much the formula needs, how heavy and what the packaging is made of, and how far it travels. A product that lasts and gets used up is usually more sustainable than one thrown away half full.
10Cómo leer una etiqueta INCIHow to read an INCI label
En Centroamérica, el reglamento técnico de etiquetado de cosméticos (RTCA 71.03.36:07) pide declarar los ingredientes con su nombre INCI.INCI is the international name of each cosmetic ingredient, the same in every country. In Central America, the cosmetics labelling technical regulation (RTCA 71.03.36:07) requires ingredients to be declared by their INCI name.
Ingredients are listed from most to least. In the EU, those below 1% can go in any order. Tap each name in this made-up cream to see what it does.
Disuelve los ingredientes que van en agua. Es el ingrediente principal.Dissolves the water-soluble ingredients. It is the main ingredient.
GlycerinHumectanteHumectant
Atrae agua. Draws in water. It can be plant-derived or synthetic: the INCI name is the same.
Caprylic/Capric TriglycerideEmolienteEmollient
Aceite ligero hecho a partir de aceite de coco, separado y transformado (el coco fraccionado).A light oil made from coconut oil, separated and processed (fractionated coconut).
SqualaneEmolienteEmollient
It can come from olives, from sugarcane or, in the past, from shark liver. The label says the same in all three cases.
Cetearyl AlcoholEspesanteThickener
Una cera suave de origen graso. No es el alcohol que reseca.A soft fatty wax. It is not the drying kind of alcohol.
Glyceryl StearateEmulsionanteEmulsifier
Helps keep the water and oil from separating.
PanthenolAcondicionadorConditioning agent
Provitamina B5, obtenida por síntesis.Provitamin B5, made by synthesis.
Sodium HyaluronateHumectanteHumectant
Ácido hialurónico, obtenido por fermentación.Hyaluronic acid, made by fermentation.
TocopherolAntioxidanteAntioxidant
Vitamin E: stops the oils going rancid. It is not a preservative.
PhenoxyethanolConservantePreservative
Protege el agua de bacterias. En la UE, máximo 1 %.Protects the water from bacteria. In the EU, 1% maximum.
ParfumAromaFragrance
One word that can hide dozens of substances. If they are essential oils, they are sometimes named separately.
Scent molecules named because some people are allergic to them. They can come from lavender and orange.
What the label does not say: exactly how much of each ingredient, where each comes from, its quality, the pH, whether the preservative works or whether the product is well made. The INCI list tells you what is in it and helps you avoid something if you are allergic; it does not decide whether a product is safe.
For each statement, tap “Myth” or “Fact” and read the explanation.
1Si no puedo pronunciar el ingrediente, es peligroso. If I cannot pronounce an ingredient, it is dangerous.
Mito.Myth. Vitamin E’s INCI name is Tocopherol and water’s is Aqua. Technical names make sure everyone means the same substance; they say nothing about safety.
2Un cosmético natural no necesita conservantes.A natural cosmetic does not need preservatives.
Mito.Myth. Bacteria and fungi do not care where the ingredients came from: if there is water, they can grow. What decides it is whether the formula contains water or will get wet.
3Todo lo sintético es perjudicial.Everything synthetic is harmful.
Mito.Myth. Panthenol and niacinamide are synthetic and among the best-tolerated ingredients. Each substance is judged on its own, not by its origin.
4Un producto sin parabenos es necesariamente más seguro.A paraben-free product is necessarily safer.
Mito.Myth. It depends on what replaces them and how much. The permitted parabens are among the most studied preservatives; whatever is used instead must be assessed too.
5Los aceites esenciales no provocan alergias.Essential oils do not cause allergies.
Mito. They can. Molecules such as linalool, limonene, geraniol or cinnamal are on the EU allergen list, especially once oxidised. That is why every oil has a maximum dose.
Whatever is made in a lab is always less sustainable.
Mito.Myth.No siempre. Not always. Plant-based squalane replaced the shark-liver kind, and some molecules are made by fermentation using far less land than growing them would. You have to look at the whole life cycle.
If an ingredient is approved by COSMOS, the whole formula is certified.
Mito.Myth.No. No. Approving an ingredient and certifying a product are different things. The finished product needs its own certification, with its formula, its factory and its audits.
A formula with more natural ingredients is always better.
Mito.Myth. A formula is good if it is stable, well preserved, uses each ingredient at its dose and does what it promises. Ten extracts do not make up for a badly chosen preservative.
9Si un producto lleva agua, necesita conservante. If a product contains water, it needs a preservative.
Realidad.Fact. It is the golden rule. The only way out without one is to make a tiny amount, keep it cold and use it within days, without selling or gifting it.
A molecule is the same whether it comes from a plant or a lab.
Realidad.Fact. If it is truly identical (including its 3-D shape), it behaves the same. What changes are the impurities and companions. Careful: sometimes “the same” is not quite, as with natural versus synthetic vitamin E.
Dose matters: something safe at one amount can irritate at another.
Realidad.Fact. It is the foundation of safety. Peppermint oil refreshes at 0.5% in a shampoo and can irritate if applied neat to the skin.

Put it all together. None of these creams can be declared safe from what you see alone; the point is to practise which questions to ask.

Mira esto antes de decidir.Look at this before deciding.
It sounds very natural, but it contains water (the floral water and the aloe) and no preservative: it can become contaminated while looking fine. Also, 2% essential oil on the face is a lot (our facial recipes use 0.2%), and beeswax alone is not a good emulsifier: it tends to separate.
It is the best on track: a preservative that works at its pH, protective packaging and a stability test. But we still do not know whether the preservative withstands real contamination (the challenge test is missing), nor the exact amount of each ingredient. To sell it, it would also need a safety assessment and registration.
The INCI list is almost the same as B’s, but the cream is not as good: benzoate only works at pH 5 or lower, so at 6.5 it is left almost unprotected against fungi, and the open jar lets more microbes in. With the same label, two products can be very different.

Todas cuentan. They all count. The INCI list does not tell you how much of each ingredient there is, the pH, whether the preservative works or the quality of each raw material. That is why a formula can never be declared safe from its label alone.
What matters is knowing its composition, quality, concentration, the exposure, its function and the formula it belongs to.
