Jabón en fríoCold process soap
¿Se puede hacer jabón sin sosa? Can you make soap without lye?
All real soap is made with lye (or potash): it is the reaction that turns oils into soap. Cured soap contains no lye, because it was transformed. If you would rather not handle it, use a melt and pour base, which is already saponified: melt and pour calculator.
¿Qué necesito para empezar a hacer jabón?What do I need to start making soap?
Balanza de 1 g, recipientes de plástico PP o de acero inoxidable (nunca aluminio), batidora de mano, espátula, molde, termómetro, guantes de nitrilo, gafas y manga larga. Usa esos utensilios solo para jabón, no para cocinar. Más en Primeros pasos.A 1 g scale, PP plastic or stainless steel containers (never aluminum), a stick blender, spatula, mold, thermometer, nitrile gloves, goggles and long sleeves. Keep these tools for soap only, not for cooking. More in Getting started.
Can I swap one oil for another in a recipe?
Only if you recalculate: each oil needs a different amount of lye. Swap it in the calculator and use the new weights. The ingredient database suggests what to swap each oil for.
¿Puedo usar aceite de cocina usado? Can I use used cooking oil?
Usa aceites frescos. Not a good idea: it is oxidized, smells of food and goes rancid quickly. Use fresh oils.
¿Qué es el sobreengrase y cuánto uso? What is superfat and how much should I use?
Para jabón de lavar ropa o platos, 0–3 %; para jabón 100 % de coco o barra de sal, 15–20 %.It is the percentage of oil you leave unconverted: it makes the bar milder and gives a safety margin. 5% is the starting point. For laundry or dish soap, 0–3%; for 100% coconut soap or salt bars, 15–20%.
¿Cuánto tiempo hay que curar el jabón?How long does soap need to cure?
El Castilla (100 % oliva) mejora con 3 meses o más.4 to 6 weeks, somewhere cool, dry and airy, with the bars apart. After 24–48 hours you can unmold and cut with gloves, but curing makes it harder, milder and longer-lasting. Castile (100% olive) improves with 3 months or more.
Why does lye go into water and never the reverse?
If you pour water onto lye, the water dissolves only the top layer, a crust traps the heat and the mixture can boil up and splash. Adding lye little by little to the water spreads the heat. Wear gloves and goggles, work with good ventilation and do not breathe the fumes. If it splashes your skin, rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes; if it gets in your eyes, rinse for 15 minutes and seek medical help right away. Never use vinegar on skin. More in Getting started.
¿Puedo usar agua del tubo? Can I use tap water?
Mejor agua destilada o desionizada. Hard-water minerals reduce lather, leave scum and encourage rancid spots. If you only have tap water, add citric acid or disodium EDTA (the calculator adjusts the lye).
Mi jabón tiene una capa blanca encima. ¿Qué es?My soap has a white layer on top. What is it?
It is “soda ash”: sodium carbonate that forms when the surface meets air before it sets. It is harmless. To avoid it, use a little less water, cover the mold with wax paper or spray isopropyl alcohol after pouring. To remove it, steam it or trim it off.
La mezcla se puso espesa de golpe. ¿Qué pasó?The batter suddenly thickened. What happened?
It is usually the fragrance (florals and spices, especially with clove or cinnamon, speed up trace), high temperatures, lots of beeswax or butter, a very strong lye solution or over-blending. Work at 35–40 °C, blend in short bursts and add the fragrance last with a spatula. If it already thickened, pour quickly and smooth it with a spatula. Note: if the batter is cold (below 30 °C) and high in butters, it can thicken without being at trace (“false trace”): warm it slightly and keep blending.
Salieron manchas naranjas en mis jabonesOrange spots appeared on my soaps
They are rancid spots (“DOS”, dreaded orange spots). They are encouraged by old or high-linoleic oils (sunflower, grapeseed, soy), a high superfat, hard water and humid curing. Use fresh, stable oils, vitamin E or rosemary oleoresin in the oils, EDTA in the water and cure with good airflow.
How do I know if my soap has free lye?
If the recipe was calculated with the calculator, weighed on a 1 g scale and mixed to trace, none should remain. Be wary of pockets of liquid, separated oily patches, hard white crystals inside the bar or a burning feel on skin. Cured soap usually reads pH 9–10 on a strip (an approximate reading); above 10.5–11, do not use it. Never use the tongue test; if in doubt, do not use it.
Jabón de glicerinaMelt and pour
¿Por qué mi jabón de glicerina «suda»?Why does my melt and pour soap “sweat”?
Glycerin draws moisture from the air, and Costa Rica is humid. Wrap it in cling film as soon as it sets, store it somewhere dry and go easy on liquid additives and honey.
¿Puedo derretir la base varias veces? Can I melt the base more than once?
Yes, but each time it loses water and gets thicker. Melt it in short bursts (15 seconds in the microwave, stirring) or in a double boiler, without boiling it or going above 70 °C: it turns yellow and rubbery.
¿Cómo quito las burbujas de la superficie? How do I get rid of surface bubbles?
Spray isopropyl alcohol (70% or stronger) on the surface right after pouring, and between layers if you make several. It is flammable: keep it away from flames and lit stoves.
Cremas y cosméticaCreams and skin care
¿Siempre necesito conservante?Do I always need a preservative?
If the formula contains water, aloe, hydrosols or water-based extracts, yes: without a preservative it can spoil within days even if you cannot see it. Products with only oils, butters and waxes (balms, whipped butters, oils) do not need one if no water gets in; scrubs used in the shower should still be preserved. Vitamin E is not a preservative.
¿Cómo mido el pH de una crema? How do I measure the pH of a cream?
Mix 1 g of cream with 9 g of distilled water and measure with a strip or a pH meter. For skin, aim for 4.5–5.5; adjust with drops of lactic or citric acid and measure again.
¿Cuánto aceite esencial puedo poner? How much essential oil can I use?
It depends where it goes: on the face up to 1%, on lips up to 0.5%, on the body up to 2%, in rinse-off products 1–2% (in bar soap the dose is based on the oils; the calculator suggests it). Never apply them neat. Avoid cold-pressed citrus oils that react with sunlight (bergamot, lemon, lime) in leave-on products, and do not use essential oils on babies, in pregnancy or on very sensitive skin without professional advice.
¿Cuánto dura un producto casero? How long does a homemade product last?
Water-free products usually last 6–12 months away from heat and light (as long as the most fragile oil). Products with water, even with a preservative, are best used within 3–6 months unless they have been lab-tested. Make a test batch, watch it for a few weeks and date every container. If the smell, color or texture changes, throw it out.
VelasCandles
¿Por qué mi vela hace un túnel? Why is my candle tunneling?
The wick is too small for the jar’s diameter or the first burn was too short. The first time, let it burn until the whole surface melts (about 1 hour per inch of diameter, but no more than 4 hours at a time). Trim the wick to 5 mm (1/4 in) before each lighting. The candle calculator suggests how many wicks to use.
¿Qué cuidados de seguridad tienen las velas? What safety precautions do candles need?
Melt wax in a double boiler, never over direct heat, and stay below the data-sheet temperature. If wax catches fire, cover it and turn off the heat; never use water. Never leave a lit candle unattended.
¿Cuánta fragancia lleva una vela? How much fragrance does a candle take?
With the shop’s candle fragrances, 3–5% of the total weight, without exceeding your wax’s maximum load. Add it at the temperature on the data sheet and stir for 2 minutes. Candle fragrances are not for skin: in soap and cosmetics use cosmetic-grade fragrances only.

¿Puedo vender lo que hago? Can I sell what I make?
In Costa Rica, cosmetics, including soap, must go through the Ministry of Health procedures and carry a label that follows the RTCA. Get advice from a regulatory adviser before selling.
Can I use the calculators’ INCI list on my label?
It is a good starting point: it uses INCI names and lists from largest to smallest. But it is for guidance: confirm each name with the supplier’s sheet and check the full label with a regulatory adviser before printing.
