🧪Conservantes y pHPreservatives and pH
A lovingly made cream can fill with mould in a few weeks if you do not protect it. Here you will see why it happens, which products need a preservative, how to choose one from the shop according to your formula’s pH, and how to measure and adjust that pH step by step.

Why do products spoil?
Ahí empiezan a multiplicarse.Where there is water there is life. Bacteria, moulds and yeasts are too small to see, and they are everywhere: on your hands, in the air and in tap water. When they land in a cream they find just what they need to live: water, food (oils, sugars, extracts) and, in a warm climate, heat. There they start to multiply.
Moulds and yeasts are fungi. Bacteria are a different group. A good preservative has to handle both.
¿Cómo llegan? How do they get in?
Even when they look clean, they carry microbes. So do the fingers dipped into the jar every day.
It brings mould spores and dust while you work and every time you open the container.
Tap water is not sterile and carries minerals. For cosmetics, use distilled or deionised water.
A poorly washed jar, spatula or blender contaminates the whole batch.
Extracts, clays, plant powders and honey can bring their own microbes.
Top, no preservative: on day 0 one microbe gets in; by day 7 there are several; by day 14 the cream changes colour; after a month there is mould, spots and the water separates. Bottom, with preservative: the same microbe gets in, but cannot multiply. The days are an example: how long it takes depends on heat, hygiene and the formula.
¿Qué se ve cuando pasa? What do you see when it happens?
Sour, musty, rancid or simply different from day one.
Black, green, pink or grey dots, on the surface or under the lid.
A layer of water or oil forms, or the cream splits.
🎨Color y texturaColour and textureSe oscurece, amarillea, se pone grumosa, babosa o hace burbujas. It darkens, yellows, turns lumpy or slimy, or forms bubbles.
Si notas cualquiera de estas señales, bótalo; no lo «rescates».A product can be contaminated and look perfect. That is why “checking it looks fine” is not enough: the preservative has to be there from day one. If you notice any of these signs, throw it away; do not try to “rescue” it.
2¿Qué productos necesitan conservante?Which products need a preservative?
The rule is simple: if the formula contains water, it gets a preservative. If it has no water, usually not, with one important exception.
Siempre necesitan conservanteAlways need a preservative
Creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, conditioners, synthetic liquid cleansers, toners, mists and anything made with hydrosols or floral waters.
They contain free water: food and shelter for microbes.
Sí, si les va a entrar aguaYes, if water will get in
Sugar or salt scrubs, whipped shower butters and anything water-free that is used with wet hands or kept in the bathroom.
There is no water in the formula, but they get some with each use.
En general no lo necesitanUsually do not need one
Oils, oil-only serums, balms, butters, lip balms and cold-process soap.
Without water microbes do not grow. What does happen is that they go rancid: that is what vitamin E is for.
Antioxidante no es lo mismo que conservante. An antioxidant is not the same as a preservative. Una crema con vitamina E sigue necesitando un conservante de verdad.from the shop stops oils going rancid, that is, oxidising in the air and smelling stale. But it does not stop bacteria or fungi. A cream with vitamin E still needs a real preservative.
¿Y si no quiero conservante? What if I do not want a preservative? The fridge only slows microbes down; it does not stop them. If you really want a water-based product without one, make very small amounts, keep them cold and use them within a few days. Never sell or gift it like that.
3Cómo funciona un conservante y cómo elegirloHow a preservative works and how to choose one
Se usa en cantidades pequeñas, casi siempre por debajo de 1,5 %.A preservative does not sterilise a product or make it last forever. Its job is to stop the microbes that get in (while you make it and every time someone opens the jar) from multiplying during the product’s life. It is used in small amounts, almost always below 1.5%.
Left: a broad-spectrum preservative covers the whole jar. Right: one that covers only bacteria leaves a gap. Fungi (moulds and yeasts) get through and grow. That is why phenoxyethanol is combined with another.
Seis preguntas para elegirSix questions for choosing
It should cover bacteria and also fungi (moulds and yeasts). If one alone does not, it is combined with another.
Each preservative works within a range. Outside it, it loses strength even at the right dose.
There is a minimum dose for it to protect and a maximum for safety or by law. More is not better.
🚿¿Se enjuaga?Rinsed off? A shampoo stays on the skin for a few minutes; a cream, all day. Some preservatives have lower limits for leave-on products.
🌡️TemperaturaTemperatureMuchos se dañan con el calor: se agregan al final, cuando el producto ya bajó de 40 °C.Many are damaged by heat: they go in at the end, once the product is below 40 °C.
Some clash with other ingredients: for example, benzoate does not go with vitamin C, and cationics need a test in strongly anionic shampoos.
Why does pH matter so much? Some preservatives, such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, only work in their acid form. At pH 4 a good share is active; at pH 6 almost none. That is why benzoate- and sorbate-based preservatives need an acidic product (5.5 or lower).
Aguanta hasta 80 °C.At the end, premixed with water, glycerin or propylene glycol (10–15% of the formula). Withstands up to 80 °C.
Fase acuosa o al enfriar, bajo 60 °C. Con poca agua, disuélvelo antes en glicerina.Water phase or cool-down, below 60 °C. With little water, dissolve it in glycerin first.
Dissolved in part of the water; water phase at 60 °C or below, or at cool-down.
Data from each preservative’s sheet (tap the name to open it). Sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanol are used in combination. The minimum pH for Sharomix AM720 and benzoate is not given on their sheets; 3 is used here as a prudent limit, the same as for the other acid-range preservatives.
No es un conservante por sí solo.(0.1% in the water phase) traps metals in the water and makes the preservative work better. It is not a preservative on its own.
Y ningún conservante reemplaza la higiene (paso 8).More is not better: going over the dose does not protect more and can irritate. And no preservative replaces hygiene (step 8).
4¿Qué conservante me sirve?Which preservative suits me?
Try it with your own formula. The tool checks each shop preservative against pH, product type and vitamin C, and tells you how many grams to weigh for your batch. Try raising the pH to 6.5, like a carbomer gel, and see which preservatives drop out.

Choose your product, move the pH and type the batch size. It uses the data from the shop’s sheets.

This is a guide for choosing and getting started. Measure your product’s real pH, follow each preservative’s sheet and, if you plan to sell, run a lab challenge test.
5¿Qué es el pH?What is pH?
Un aceite o un bálsamo sin agua no tiene pH que medir.pH tells you how acidic or how alkaline (basic) something containing water is. The scale runs from 0 to 14: 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above is alkaline. An oil or a water-free balm has no pH to measure.
1Jugo de limón: ≈ 2Lemon juice: ≈ 2
2Vinagre: ≈ 2,5–3Vinegar: ≈ 2.5–3
3Piel: 4,5–5,5Skin: 4.5–5.5
4Agua pura: 7 (neutro)Pure water: 7 (neutral)
The red arrow points to more acidic and the blue one to more alkaline. Values are approximate.
Cada punto es 10 veces másEach point is 10 times more
The scale is not like a ruler: it is logarithmic. Going from pH 6 to pH 5 makes the product 10 times more acidic, and from 6 to 4, 100 times. That is why a change of “just half a point” matters, and why acid is added drop by drop.
Each dot stands for acidity (H⁺ ions). At pH 6 there is one; at pH 5, ten; at pH 4, a hundred.
¿Por qué importa? Why does it matter?
ConservantesPreservatives
Cada uno funciona en su rango. El Sharomix AM720 y el Biosure AO3 piden 5,5 o menos; el Sharomix AM24 aguanta de 3 a 9.Each works in its own range. Sharomix AM720 and Biosure AO3 need 5.5 or lower; Sharomix AM24 copes with 3 to 9.
PielSkin
The skin’s surface is slightly acidic (4.5–5.5). Creams and toners are usually formulated near that range so they feel comfortable.
ActivosActives
Some actives only work, or only stay stable, at a certain pH. Always check their sheet before formulating.
EspesantesThickeners
Xanthan gum, on the other hand, works across almost the whole range.
Cold-process soap is a different world: it is naturally alkaline (9–10) and should stay that way. Its pH is not lowered like a cream’s.
6Cómo medir el pHHow to measure pH
Cheap and easy. The strip changes colour and you compare it with the chart on the pack. They are a guide: they tell you “about 5”, not “5.3”. In coloured or very thick creams they are hard to read.
pHmetropH meter
It gives a precise number, with decimals. It must be calibrated before use with two buffer solutions (solutions with a fixed, known pH) at pH 4 and 7. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and store it moist, in its solution.
Left: the wet strip is compared with the colour chart. Right: the pH meter is calibrated with pH 4 and pH 7 buffer solutions before measuring.
Cremas espesas: diluye 1 en 9Thick creams: dilute 1 in 9
A thick cream leaves almost no free water in contact with the strip or the electrode: it coats them in fat and the reading comes out wrong. So mix 1 part cream with 9 parts distilled water (for example, 1 g with 9 g) and measure that mixture. Distilled water is used because it barely changes the pH; tap water carries minerals that do shift it.
1 parte de crema + 9 partes de agua destilada = 10 partes de mezcla para medir, a temperatura ambiente (unos 20–25 °C).1 part cream + 9 parts distilled water = 10 parts of mixture to measure, at room temperature (about 20–25 °C).
Diluting may shift the reading slightly towards 7. That is fine: what matters is always measuring the same way, so you can compare one batch with another.
Paso a pasoStep by step
Wait until the product is cool, at room temperature. pH changes with temperature, the formula finishes settling as it cools, and heat wears out the electrode.
If it is thick, weigh 1 g into a clean cup and add 9 g of distilled water. Mix until there are no lumps. Liquids (toners, runny shampoos) are measured directly.
With a meter: calibrate with the 4 and 7 buffers, rinse the electrode with distilled water, dip it in the sample and wait until the number settles.
With a strip: wet it for a few seconds, shake off the excess and compare it with the chart within the time the pack says.
Write down the pH, the date and the batch. Rinse the electrode and store it in its solution.
7Cómo ajustar el pHHow to adjust pH
La regla de oro: poco a poco, mezclando y midiendo cada vez.pH is adjusted at the end, with the product complete and cool, because every ingredient shifts it a little (coco-glucoside, for example, comes very alkaline). The golden rule: little by little, mixing and measuring each time.
⬇️ Para bajarloTo lower it
Agrega gota a gota, mezcla bien y mide. Elas a 50% solution: 1 part acid in 1 part distilled water, by weight. Add it drop by drop, mix well and measure. ácido lácticoLactic acidtambién sirve.also works.
⬆️ Para subirloTo raise it
It is what neutralises carbomer: as a guide, about 1.5 g of TEA per 1 g of carbomer brings the gel to pH 7. Baking soda also raises pH a little, but it fizzes with acids and does not go above ≈ 8.3.
Ejemplo práctico: 500 g de crema a pH 6,3 que quieres llevar a 5,5.Worked example: 500 g of cream at pH 6.3 that you want to bring to 5.5.
Start with 2–3 drops of 50% citric acid solution, mix for a minute and measure. Repeat until you get there. As a guide, the citric acid sheet gives 0.1% as a starting point for a cream: in 500 g that is 0.5 g of acid, or 1 g of solution, about 20 drops (one drop weighs ≈ 0.05 g; it depends on the dropper). You will rarely need it all at once.
Write down how many drops you used: the next batch of the same formula will need about the same.
In skin products do not go below pH 3.5 unless you really know what you are doing.
Carbomer thickens when neutralised (pH 6–7). If you then lower the pH a lot, the gel turns runny again.
If you overshoot, correct with the opposite, but every correction adds salts to the formula: better to go slowly. Citric acid and TEA irritate the eyes: wear goggles and gloves.
All the amounts in this step are a guide: the one that counts is what your meter or strip shows.
8Higiene y vida útilHygiene and shelf life
The preservative protects against the few microbes that always slip in. If many get in while you work, no preservative can keep up. Hygiene is the other half of the job.
Wash equipment and containers with soap and water, rinse them and spray them with 70% alcohol. Let them air-dry. 70% alcohol sanitises better than 96%; to make it, mix 73 ml of 96% alcohol with 27 ml of distilled water.
Clean the work surface, tie your hair back with a hairnet and wear gloves. Sanitise the gloves with alcohol too.
Use distilled or deionised water, never tap water. And do not leave it open for days on end: it gets contaminated too.
Choose pump, spray or tube containers over an open jar: that way nobody dips their fingers in.
Label each container with the batch number and the date it was made, and write the formula in your notebook.
The open jar with a number and an “M” tells you how many months the product lasts once opened (PAO, period after opening): 6M is 6 months and 12M is 12 months.
Without a lab test, be cautious: give water-based products a short life (for example, 6M or less) and keep longer periods for oils and balms protected with vitamin E. These are rough guides, not a rule.
Keep three small samples of each new batch: one at room temperature, one somewhere warm (about 40 °C) and one in the sun in a clear container. Check them every week for one to three months: smell, colour, texture, separation and pH. If they change, the formula needs work.
The home test is only a guide. Only a challenge test (ISO 11930) in a lab, where microbes are added to the product on purpose and the lab measures whether the preservative controls them, shows that your formula is well protected. If you plan to sell, do it.
