Cold process soap is not magic: it is a chemical reaction between fats and lye. Once you understand what happens in the mould, you can design your own recipes, work safely and know why a bar comes out hard, mild or spotty.

Every oil or butter is made almost entirely of triglycerides. A triglyceride is a molecule shaped like a three-toothed comb: a glycerine “backbone” with three fatty acids attached, long chains of carbon.
Lye (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) breaks those bonds. Each fatty acid comes loose and pairs up with sodium: that is soap, a fatty-acid salt. The glycerine is set free and stays in the bar. This reaction is called saponification.
Each oil needs a different amount of lye. That number is its saponification value (SAP): the milligrams of potassium hydroxide (KOH) one gram of oil needs. That is why soap recipes are weighed in grams and calculated, never made “by eye”.
Look at the soap molecule’s head and tail: it is an anionic surfactant, just like those in a shampoo. The tail grabs grease and the head goes off with the water.
Most of the reaction happens in the first 24 to 48 hours, in the mould. That is why freshly unmoulded soap is not used yet.
Con estas reglas se trabaja tranquilo:Lye is corrosive: it burns skin and can permanently damage the eyes. With these rules you can work calmly:
Wear nitrile or rubber gloves, safety goggles that cover your eyes well and long sleeves. Tie back your hair.
Use containers made of PP plastic (polypropylene, number 5 in the recycling triangle) or stainless steel. Never aluminium: lye corrodes it and releases a flammable gas (hydrogen). Avoid thin glass, which can crack with the heat.
Work somewhere ventilated, by an open window or outdoors. As it dissolves, lye gets very hot (it can approach 90 °C) and gives off fumes for the first minute: do not lean over it or breathe them in.
Pour the lye INTO the cold water, a little at a time, stirring. Never pour the water onto the lye: it heats up all at once, boils in one spot and can splash.
Keep children and pets away. Label the container of solution and never leave it unattended.
Raw batter and freshly unmoulded soap are caustic too: keep your gloves and goggles on until everything is washed. Keep your tools for soap only, never for food.
Si te salpicaIf it splashes you
On skin: take off any wet clothing and rinse with plenty of running water for 15 minutes. Never put vinegar on skin: the acid and the lye react, release more heat and make the burn worse.
Si alguien la traga, no le provoques el vómito y llama al 9-1-1 o al Centro Nacional de Intoxicaciones (800-INTOXICA, línea gratuita, o 2223-1028).In the eyes: rinse with water for 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open, and get medical help straight away. If someone swallows it, do not make them vomit and call 9-1-1 or Costa Rica’s National Poison Centre (800-INTOXICA, free line, or 2223-1028).
Vinegar is only for wiping down worktops and utensils, never for skin. And keep lye tightly closed in its container: it absorbs moisture from the air and loses strength.
Where do you get it? Lye is not sold online: it is a substance controlled by Costa Rica’s ICD (Costa Rican Drug Institute). Write to us and we will point you in the right direction.
Los ácidos grasos y sus personalidadesFatty acids and their personalities
Each oil is a blend of several fatty acids, and each fatty acid gives the soap a character. The percentages are typical values from our database.
- Láurico y mirísticoLauric and myristicCoco (láurico 49 %, mirístico 19 % en nuestra base) y palmiste.Coconut (lauric 49%, myristic 19% in our database) and palm kernel.Espuma rápida y abundante y limpieza fuerte, incluso en agua fría o dura. También endurecen. En exceso resecan.Quick, abundant lather and strong cleansing, even in cold or hard water. They also harden. Too much is drying.
- Palmítico y esteáricoPalmitic and stearicPalma (palmítico 43 %), manteca de karité (esteárico 38 %), manteca de cacao, sebo.Palm (palmitic 43%), shea butter (stearic 38%), cocoa butter, tallow. Hardness and a creamy, fine-bubbled, long-lasting lather. The bar wears down more slowly.
- OleicoOleicOliva (69 %), aguacate, almendra dulce, girasol alto oleico.Olive (69%), avocado, sweet almond, high-oleic sunflower. Mildness and a conditioning feel. But it reacts slowly: trace takes longer and the bar comes out soft and needs a long cure.
They condition and feel silky, but they oxidise easily: over time the bar turns rancid and orange spots appear (DOS). Use them sparingly.
- RicinoleicoRicinoleicRicino (90 %). Casi ningún otro aceite lo tiene.Castor (90%). Hardly any other oil has it.Espuma cremosa y estable, y ayuda a que la espuma del coco dure. Creamy, stable lather, and it helps coconut lather last. 5% is enough; above 10% the bar may feel sticky.
Why do some make hard bars and others soft? Because of the shape of the chain. Saturated fatty acids (lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic) have straight chains that stack like pencils in a box: the soap sets firm. Unsaturated ones (oleic, linoleic, linolenic, ricinoleic) have bends in the chain, do not pack well and the soap is softer.
That same bend, the double bond, is where oxygen gets in. The more double bonds, the more easily it goes rancid: linolenic has three, linoleic two and oleic one.
Our calculator uses the SoapCalc method: it adds up the percentages of certain fatty acids across the whole blend to get five properties. They are not lab measurements, but a practical way to compare recipes.
| PropiedadProperty | Se calcula sumandoWorked out by adding | RangoRange |
|---|---|---|
How hard and long-lasting the bar is. | 29–54 |
| LimpiezaCleansing | láurico + mirístico (+ caprílico y cáprico)lauric + myristic (+ caprylic and capric) Cuánta grasa quita. Muy alta, reseca. How much grease it removes. Too high is drying. | 12–22 |
The softness you feel on the skin. | 44–69 |
| Espuma (burbuja)Bubbly lather | láurico + mirístico + ricinoleico (+ caprílico y cáprico)lauric + myristic + ricinoleic (+ caprylic and capric) Espuma grande, rápida y abundante.Big, quick, abundant bubbles. | 14–46 |
| CremosidadCreamy lather | palmítico + esteárico + ricinoleicopalmitic + stearic + ricinoleic Espuma fina, densa y que dura.Fine, dense, lasting lather. | 16–48 |
One detail of our calculator: caprylic and capric acids, which are short-chain (coconut has them, and fractionated coconut above all), also count towards cleansing and lather, because their soaps clean strongly. So with coconut you may see cleansing a little higher than in other calculators.
It measures how many double bonds the blend has. High = softer and more rancidity risk. The classic range is 41–70, but in a hot, humid climate like Costa Rica’s, aim for 60 or less.
INS
It is the SAP minus the iodine value: a single number for the balance between hardness and mildness. The suggested range is 136–165. It is a quick guide, not a rule.
The ranges are a guide. A pure olive (Castile) soap falls outside several ranges and is still a classic, very mild soap: it just needs a long cure.
Mezcla tus aceitesMix your oils
Now try it. We start with a classic recipe: olive, coconut, shea and a little castor. Look at cleansing: with 30% coconut it sits just above the range. What happens if you lower coconut to 25% and raise olive?
Mezcla tus aceitesMix your oils
Choose up to 4 oils and their percentage. They must add up to 100%. The meters show the recommended zone in light green.
Each oil’s values are typical and vary from batch to batch: treat them as a guide. Before making soap, run the recipe through the full calculator, which also works out the water.

Lye is worked out like this: SAP (KOH) × 39.997 ÷ 56.1056 ÷ 1000 × grams of oil × (1 − superfat). The 39.997 ÷ 56.1056 factor converts from potassium hydroxide to sodium hydroxide, because the NaOH molecule is lighter.
Superfat is the percentage of oil you deliberately leave unsaponified, that is, not turned into soap. You get it by using a little less lye than the oils could use. That free oil makes the bar milder and is a safety margin: oils vary from batch to batch and scales have some error, so no free lye is left in the bar.
The most common for hand and body soap: mild and with a margin, without the bar feeling greasy or going rancid quickly.
Coconut cleanses so strongly that at 5% it is drying. With a high superfat it makes a pleasant, very lathery coconut soap.
Laundry or household cleaning soap: you want maximum cleaning and no oily residue. It is not for skin.
Below 3% there is little margin for skin; above 15% (except coconut soap), the bar comes out soft and goes rancid sooner. Waxes and ingredients that do not make soap raise the real superfat.
When you mix the lye solution with the oils and blend, the mixture starts to thicken. That point is called trace: when a trail of batter drizzled on top stays visible for a moment. It is the sign that saponification has started and it will no longer separate.
En jabón, el clavo va hasta 0,15 % y la canela hasta 0,5 %.Spicy essential oils such as clove or cinnamon, and many floral fragrances. In soap, clove goes up to 0.15% and cinnamon up to 0.5%. ClavoClove · CanelaCinnamon
Very hot oils or lye solution. Working at roughly 30–45 °C gives you more time.
- Batir de másOver-blending La batidora de mano acelera mucho. Alterna pulsos cortos con revolver a mano.A stick blender speeds things up a lot. Alternate short bursts with stirring by hand.
- Mucho aceite sólidoLots of solid fat Recetas con mucha palma, karité o cacao espesan rápido. Recipes heavy in palm, shea or cocoa butter thicken fast. High-olive recipes, on the other hand, are slow.
Have the mould, colours and scent ready before mixing. Pour at light or medium trace, cover the mould and leave it alone for 24 to 48 hours.
En ese tiempo pasan tres cosas:After unmoulding and cutting, bars are left to cure for 4 to 6 weeks somewhere cool, airy and out of direct sun, with space between them. During that time three things happen:
The recipe’s water evaporates: the bar loses weight and shrinks a little.
The bar hardens and lasts longer in the shower.
The soap becomes milder on the skin: it finishes reacting and settles.
Eso es normal y no significa que tenga soda libre.pH measures how acidic or alkaline something is, from 0 to 14; 7 is neutral. All true soap is alkaline: a well-made, cured soap usually reads around 9 to 10. That is normal and does not mean it has free lye.
How to tell if it turned out well: wet the bar, rub it and press a pH strip into the lather. If it reads 10 or less and the bar is firm, even and free of liquid pockets, it is fine. If it reads 11 or more, or the bar stings, do not use it and check the recipe in the calculator.
You may have heard of the “zap test” (touching the bar with your tongue to see if it “zaps”). We do not recommend it: it is unreliable and, if there is free lye, it burns. pH strips are cheap and safer.
Problemas comunes y siguiente pasoCommon problems and next steps
| ProblemaProblem | Por qué pasaWhy it happens | Cómo evitarloHow to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
Lye at the surface reacts with the air (with carbon dioxide) before it turns into soap. It happens more with lots of water or with cool soap. Cover the mould for the first 24 hours, do not use extra water and spritz the surface with alcohol just after pouring. It is harmless: scrape it off or steam it. |
It never reached true trace (a “false trace” from butters cooling), or the weights or the lye were wrong. Check the recipe in the calculator, weigh in grams, blend to true trace and work at roughly 30–45 °C. If liquid weeps from a finished bar, do not use it. |
| La barra no endureceThe bar will not harden | Por qué pasaWhy it happensMucho aceite líquido (oleico), mucha agua, poca soda (por ejemplo, soda vieja que absorbió humedad) o poco tiempo.Lots of liquid oil (oleic), too much water, too little lye (for example, old lye that absorbed moisture) or not enough time. Aim for a hardness of 29 or more, keep lye tightly closed and give it time: a high-olive bar takes longer. Sodium lactate, 1–3% of the oils, helps unmoulding. |
Old oils, heat, humidity, light and a high superfat all play a part. | Cómo evitarloHow to avoid itUsa aceites frescos, poco linoleico y linolénico, un índice de yodo de 60 o menos en clima tropical, cura en un lugar fresco y ventilado, y agrega un antioxidante como la vitamina E.Use fresh oils, little linoleic and linolenic, an iodine value of 60 or less in a tropical climate, cure somewhere cool and airy, and add an antioxidant such as vitamin E. |
More help in the ingredient sheets: sodium lactate, which hardens the bar, and vitamin E, a natural antioxidant (tocopherol) that helps oils take longer to oxidise. It is not a preservative.
