Shampoos, gels, creams and conditioners work thanks to surfactants. Here you will see what they are, how they are classified, what each family does and why they are combined, using the ones Apotecario sells.
¿Qué es un tensioactivo?What is a surfactant?
It is a molecule with two parts that do not get along:
Tail: loves oil (lipophilic). It is usually a fatty chain, for example from coconut.
Since each part wants to be somewhere different, surfactants settle right at the boundary between water and oil, or water and air. That lowers surface tension: water wets better, mixes with grease and foams.
When washing, the tails trap grease and dirt inside a tiny ball called a micelle, with the heads facing the water. Rinsing carries the whole micelle away.
Surfactants are classified by the electric charge of their head. It is what matters most when formulating: it decides what they do and what they can be mixed with.
AniónicosAnionic
Cabeza con carga negativaHead with a negative charge
The big cleansers: they remove grease well and make lots of foam. On their own they can dry or irritate, so they are almost always paired.
Se usan en:Used in:Champús, geles de baño, jabones líquidos y barras de champú.Shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps and shampoo bars.
El jabón de toda la vida también es un tensioactivo aniónico: son sales de ácidos grasos (en la etiqueta, «Sodium Olivate», «Sodium Cocoate»…).Traditional soap is also an anionic surfactant: it is made of fatty-acid salts (on the label, “Sodium Olivate”, “Sodium Cocoate”…).
Cabeza con carga positivaHead with a positive charge
Casi no limpian. The conditioners. Hair, especially damaged hair, carries a negative charge; the positive head sticks to it like a magnet and leaves a thin layer that smooths, tames frizz and static. They barely clean.
Se usan en:Used in:Acondicionadores, mascarillas y cremas para peinar.Conditioners, hair masks and leave-in creams.
El policuaternio-7 no es un tensioactivo sino un polímero catiónico: acondiciona y, a diferencia del BTMS-50, está pensado para convivir con los aniónicos de un champú (aun así, haz una prueba: con algunos puede enturbiar).Polyquaternium-7 is not a surfactant but a cationic polymer: it conditions and, unlike BTMS-50, is designed to live alongside the anionics in a shampoo (still, test it: with some it can cloud).
Cabeza con carga positiva y negativa (según el pH)Head with both a positive and a negative charge (depending on pH)
The softeners of the group. They reduce the irritation of anionics, make foam creamier and more stable, and help thicken.
Se usan en:Used in:Champús suaves, productos para bebé y limpiadores faciales.Mild shampoos, baby products and face cleansers.
Having no charge, they get along with almost everything. Depending on their shape, they cleanse gently, thicken foam, emulsify creams or dissolve essential oils in water.
Se usan en:Used in:Limpiadores suaves, cremas y lociones, tónicos y sprays con aroma.Gentle cleansers, creams and lotions, scented toners and sprays.
Why cationics condition: hair carries negative charges and the positive heads cling to it. The tails face outwards and smooth the surface.
Cinco trabajosFive jobs
Todos tienen cabeza y cola, pero según el tamaño de cada parte y su carga hacen trabajos distintos:They all have a head and a tail, but depending on the size of each part and its charge they do different jobs:
They trap grease and dirt so water can carry them away.
They sit between water and air and hold the bubbles up. People like foam, but it is not what cleans.
They keep tiny oil droplets spread through water: that is how a cream is made.
They dissolve a little oil in a lot of water, like the essential oil in a toner, and the liquid stays clear.
They cling to hair and leave it soft and easy to comb.
Low: the molecule is more “oily”. High: it is more “watery”. It helps you choose a surfactant for the job. Note: this scale was designed for nonionics (emulsifiers and solubilisers); for anionic, cationic and amphoteric surfactants HLB is rarely used.

¿Por qué una crema lleva tensioactivos? Why does a cream contain surfactants?
Because an emulsifier is a surfactant. In a cream, its tails sink into the oil droplets and its heads face the water. That keeps the droplets from merging, so the cream does not separate.
A cream seen up close: oil droplets in water, each one surrounded by emulsifier.
So why does a cream not foam or wash? Because emulsifiers are chosen to stay attached to the droplets (in CreamMaker, cetearyl alcohol and glyceryl stearate have long chains) and are used in small amounts, 3–8%. Shampoo surfactants are more water-soluble, form micelles and are used in much larger amounts.
It works the other way too: a shampoo emulsifies some of the oil on your hair, which is how it removes it.
¿Por qué se combinan? Why combine them?
Casi ningún champú lleva un solo tensioactivo. Se combinan para ganar suavidad, espuma y textura:Hardly any shampoo has just one surfactant. They are combined to gain mildness, foam and texture:
The classic shampoo pair. Betaine softens the anionic, thickens and makes the foam creamier and longer-lasting. Example: SCI or sarcosinate with cocamidopropyl betaine.

Aniónico + no iónicoAnionic + nonionic(buena combinación)(good combination)
Coco-glucoside adds mildness and fine foam; cocamide DEA thickens and stabilises the foam.
Un poco de policuaternio-7 en el champú deja el cabello más suave. Está hecho para convivir con los aniónicos.A little polyquaternium-7 in a shampoo leaves hair softer. It is made to live alongside anionics.
In larger amounts, the negative and positive charges attract, cancel each other out and the product splits or stops working. That is why shampoo and conditioner are kept separate.
✗
Jabón líquido + ácidos o catiónicosLiquid soap + acids or cationics(evítala)(avoid it)
Soap is anionic and alkaline. If you add an acid (citric, vinegar) or a cationic to liquid soap, it splits and stops cleaning. In bar soap a little citric acid is used, but it uses up lye, so you must compensate for it in the calculator.
Aniónico (−) y catiónico fuerte (+): se atraen, se pegan y forman grumos. El producto se corta.Anionic (−) and strong cationic (+): they attract, stick together and clump. The product splits.
Materia activaActive matter
Many surfactants come dissolved in water. Cocamidopropyl betaine has about 30% active matter: if you put 20 g into 100 g of shampoo, you add 6 g of surfactant, not 20. What matters when formulating is the total active matter.
Pruébalo:As a guide, a shampoo or shower gel contains 10–20% total active matter; a gentle face cleanser, less. Try it:

The active % is a typical value: change it to match your batch label. These ranges are for liquid products; a shampoo bar contains much more active matter. Cocamide DEA barely cleanses: you can leave it out of the total.

Cuidado conWatch out for
More foam does not mean more cleaning. And an anionic on its own, in large amounts, can dry the skin.
El SCI en polvo y el polvillo de los fideos de SCS irritan si los respiras: usa mascarilla y lentes de seguridad al pesarlos.SCI powder and the dust from SCS noodles irritate if you breathe them in: wear a mask and goggles when weighing them.
Check the pH of the finished shampoo: 4.5–6. Coco-glucoside comes very alkaline (pH 11.5–12.5), so the shampoo almost always needs bringing down with citric acid.
Every shampoo, gel or cream that contains water needs a preservative.
Strong cationics (BTMS-50, cetrimonium) are the base of conditioners, not shampoos. In a shampoo, use only a small amount, and test it.
